After a significant renovation, Cabo San Lucas’ main square, Plaza Amelia Wilkes, recently re-debuted in 2019 as one of the city’s most prettiest attractions for the local community and visitors alike.
The park is located right in the heart of Downtown, just a few blocks inland in from the marina, at kilometer 0 on the Baja Peninsula. Signaled with a large “KM. 0 – [Mexico Starts Here]” sign, it has become an iconic landmark that marks the very end of the highway that runs down the Baja Peninsula, 1,059 kilometers from the border.
The plaza is of great historical and cultural value for Cabo San Lucas. It received its name in honor of Amelia Wilkes Ceseña, a local Baja woman who brought many public services to the city, such as electricity and water. With beautiful gardens planted between accessible pathways, the focal point of this park is a picture-perfect bandstand gazebo and the Museum of Natural History of Cabo San Lucas in its background.
A step inside the museum offers visitors insight to the geography and topography of the Southern Baja Peninsula. The exhibits on display speak about the local flora and fauna, paleontology and geobiology findings, and the Pericu and Guaycura native groups which were some of the earliest inhabitants of Baja.
In addition to the museum, the plaza proudly hosts different cultural festivals and community events. You can find them listed in the upcoming events calendar or in the local English newspaper. Every Friday evening, there is an event called “Viva la Plaza” offering live music, traditional Cabeño gastronomy, and local handicrafts. It also features various art displays with sculptures, paintings, and other artistic expressions.
Bordering the park are some of Cabo San Lucas’ favorite hang-out spots and restaurants. The Cabo Coffee Company is a must-visit café with a unique, local roasted blend which also makes a great souvenir to bring back home. There are three inviting wine bars: Invitra Italian Bistro, The Los Cabos Winery, and DOC Wine Bar, each with outdoor seating overlooking the colorful plaza. And there is also a great Mexican restaurant, Mi Casa, that offers traditional cuisine with much of the ingredients grown on their organic farm just outside town.
