As the executive president of the Los Cabos Hotel Association, Lilzi Orcí is responsible for planning and executing the strategies of the Los Cabos Hotel Association – a non-profit organization which works to achieve collaboration among government authorities, companies, and institutions who deal with providing hotel services, in order to create a unified and strong hotel sector.

Let’s get to know more about Lilzi in our conversation below.

Lilzi Orcí

How would you summarize how you got to the role you have today, and what do you love most about it?

My career in the hospitality industry has been a journey of continuous learning, commitment, and growth within the Association. I started in operational roles and gradually took on greater responsibilities until reaching the executive presidency. What I enjoy most about this position is the opportunity to contribute to the sustainable development of the destination, represent the industry, and work with a team passionate about tourism in Los Cabos. I take great pride in working alongside industry leaders to drive sustainable growth, enhance visitor experiences, and advocate for policies that benefit our members and the community.

Lilzi Orcí

Do you feel it is more challenging as a woman in your role? If so, in what ways?

The hospitality industry, like many others, has historically been male-dominated at the executive level. While great progress has been made, women in leadership positions often still face challenges such as the need to prove their capabilities repeatedly, and balancing professional and personal responsibilities.

In my experience, one of the main challenges has been ensuring that my voice is heard and that my contributions are valued equally. Early in my career, I had to develop confidence in speaking up, asserting my ideas, and building strong relationships to gain credibility. I have also witnessed the industry evolve, with more companies recognizing the value of diversity and inclusion. Today, I embrace the responsibility of setting an example for future female leaders and fostering an environment where talent is recognized regardless of gender.

Lilzi Orcí

Did you have female mentors throughout your career? If so, can you share their advice that has helped you succeed to where you are today?

Yes, I’ve been fortunate to have mentors who have guided me along the way. One of the best pieces of advice I received was: “Success is built on preparation and perseverance.” I also learned the importance of building strategic relationships. Hospitality is a people-driven industry, so having a strong professional network has been instrumental in my growth.

Do you see more women rising to the ranks in the travel industry? If so, why do you think so?

Absolutely. I see more women in leadership positions within the travel and tourism industry. This is due to cultural and organizational shifts, where female talent is increasingly recognized, along with mentorship programs, and dedicated efforts to promote gender equity in the sector.

Lilzi Orcí

Do you yourself mentor other women who want careers in hospitality?

Yes, I strongly believe in the power of mentorship and supporting other women. I actively participate in initiatives that foster professional growth for women in tourism and hospitality. Additionally, I advocate for causes such as education, and inclusion in the industry. Whenever I have the opportunity to give talks, especially at schools or universities, I speak precisely about how we can grow within the tourism industry—or in any dream they have—as long as there is perseverance and passion for what they do.

What is your message, or most important piece of advice, to other women who would like to rise in the ranks of tourism/hospitality?

My advice is to trust in your abilities, continuously seek knowledge, and never shy away from opportunities. The tourism industry offers vast opportunities for women, and with determination and hard work, any goal is within reach.

Few people know exactly what it takes to head a successful planning, design, and event production company. As the founder and CEO of her own such firm, Karla Casillas & Co., Karla Casillas starts her day very early.

She hits the gym at 5am, then heads to the office where she has strategic meetings with her team, clients, and business partners. Later in the day, she frequently attends business dinners or gatherings. On weekends, she dedicates her time to overseeing weddings and events.

For her hard work, and dedication to her craft, we honor Karla for Women’s History Month. Here is our interview:

How would you summarize how you got to the role you have today? And what do you love most about it?

My journey to where I am today has been built on passion, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. With over 20 years of experience in wedding planning and event design, I’ve had the privilege of transforming visions into unforgettable celebrations. Founding Karla Casillas & Co., and The Main Event Cabo, was a natural progression of my deep love for curating meaningful experiences and fostering connections in the industry.

What I love most about my role is the impact we have on people’s lives. Weddings and events are milestones and being entrusted to bring someone’s dream to life is both an honor, and a responsibility, I cherish. I also love mentoring and supporting other professionals, sharing knowledge, and collaborating with talented individuals to elevate the industry as a whole.

The Karla Casillas & Co. team at work

Do you feel it is more challenging as a woman in your role? If so, in what ways?

Yes, being a woman in leadership within the event and tourism industry comes with its challenges. While the wedding industry is predominantly female-driven, the business and leadership aspects—especially when working with high-end venues, vendors, and financial negotiations—can still be male-dominated. Women often have to work harder to be taken seriously in these conversations and prove their business acumen.

Additionally, balancing professional ambition with a personal life is a challenge many women face. The industry is demanding, with long hours, high-pressure situations, and constant attention to detail. As women, we are often expected to excel in both business and family life, which requires an immense level of dedication and resilience.

Karla Casillas

Did you have female mentors throughout your career? If so, can you share their advice that has helped you succeed to where you are today?

Absolutely! I have been fortunate to learn from, and be inspired by, incredible women throughout my career. Some were direct mentors, while others influenced me through their work and leadership. The best advice I received was: “Own your expertise.”

Women sometimes second-guess themselves or downplay their achievements. A mentor once told me to step into my expertise confidently—knowing that I am the best at what I do, and that I bring unique value to every project.

Next, “Relationships are everything.” This business is built on trust, collaboration, and the connections you foster. Investing in genuine relationships with clients, vendors, and colleagues has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.

And lastly, “Stay adaptable.” Events, and the tourism industry, are constantly evolving. Staying ahead requires a willingness to learn, embrace change, and innovate.

Do you see more women rising to the ranks in the travel industry? If so, why do you think so?

Yes, absolutely! Women are increasingly stepping into leadership roles in the travel, hospitality, and event industries. I believe this is happening for a few key reasons:

1. Shifting mindsets: There’s a growing recognition of the value women bring to leadership – from emotional intelligence to strategic decision-making.

2. Networking and support: Organizations like AFEET, which I am a member of, are actively supporting women’s growth in the industry.

3. Entrepreneurship: Many women are launching their own businesses in travel, events, and hospitality, creating opportunities for themselves and others.

4. Mentorship and advocacy: More established women in the industry are mentoring and opening doors for the next generation.

Do you yourself mentor other women, or give back to organizations that help women who want a career in hospitality? What other causes are important to you?

Yes, mentoring and supporting other women is something I’m very passionate about. I have trained and coached wedding planners from around the world – helping them refine their skills, build confidence, and navigate the business side of the industry.

As a member of AFEET, I actively support women in tourism and hospitality, advocating for more opportunities, leadership roles, and professional development. I also believe in empowering local women entrepreneurs and creatives, providing opportunities for them to collaborate and grow within our industry.

Beyond hospitality, I deeply care about education and leadership development for women. I believe that by sharing knowledge and experiences, we can create lasting change for future generations.

Karla Casillas at work

What is your message, or most important piece of advice, to other women who would like to rise in the ranks of hospitality?

My advice to women aspiring to rise in the hospitality industry is: Be bold, and own your value. Don’t wait for opportunities—create them. Step into leadership with confidence and never underestimate your worth. Invest in relationships. Your network is one of your greatest assets. Build meaningful connections, collaborate, and uplift others as you climb. Stay resilient. Challenges will come, but how you navigate them will define your success. Keep learning, keep pushing, and never let setbacks stop you. Lead with passion and purpose. When you love what you do and are committed to excellence, success follows.

Women have a powerful role to play in shaping the future of hospitality. By supporting and lifting each other, we can create a more inclusive and thriving industry.

"The secret of guaranteed success is consistency. Be the best version of yourself every day. Have a positive attitude, and you will stand out amongst the crowds and be trusted with more responsibility." Sandra Oliva, GM, Four Seasons Resort and Residences Los Cabos at Costa Palmas

After more than a decade of experience working in the international luxury space – much of it with the Four Seasons brand – Sandra Oliva was promoted to general manager at the award winning Four Seasons Resort and Residences Los Cabos at Costa Palmas. She just moved to Los Cabos in December 2024 for the role.

Her career at Four Seasons has given her the opportunity to travel the world and visit over 45 of the hotel’s properties. She has worked in Geneva (Switzerland), Saint Jean Cap Ferrat (France), Miami (USA), Paris (France), Florence (Italy), Philadelphia (USA) and now Los Cabos (Mexico).

Sandra Oliva, GM of Four Seasons Resort and Residences Los Cabos at Costa Palmas; photo courtesy of Four Seasons Resort and Residences Los Cabos at Costa Palmas

“This is the first time I have lived in Latin America since I left Peru, and the first time I work in my native language, Spanish,” Sandra says. “Previously, I have only worked in French, English or Italian environments before moving here, so this is an incredibly meaningful opportunity for me.”

Sandra brings with her an eclectic background. She is a French citizen born in Lima, Peru, and besides Spanish, she’s also fluent in English, French and Italian. She earned two degrees – one in hotel and tourism management, the other in marketing – and then began her first job at a hotel in Paris as an events coordinator.

In honor of Women’s History Month, below is an interview with Sandra – one of the exceptional women breaking barriers in the international hotel industry.

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Los Cabos at Costa Palmas

Can you tell us more about your very interesting family background? Also, where were you raised?

I was born in Lima, Peru. My father´s parents had Chinese (Cantonese) origins and he was a “Francophile” (in love with France). He signed me up for French school in Lima when I was three years old, and that is where I learned to speak French. All my schoolmates had French origins except me; I was one of the rare locals.

My father passed away when I was a young teenager, at which point I moved to Toulouse in the southwest of France and officially received my French citizenship.

What cities, countries did you receive your education?

I went to the French School of Lima in Peru, then in Toulouse, France (Lycée Saint Sernin). From there, I went to Hypokhâgne, which is a very exclusive and competitive academic undergraduate program that specializes in French literature and humanities.

I eventually decided to study something that would allow me to have an international career and travel. So, I obtained a bachelor’s degree in hospitality and tourism and then a master’s degree in marketing at the University of Toulouse. Since then, I have obtained certificates in digital marketing from Columbia University and food and beverage management at Cornell University.

I know you’ve had a brief departure from hospitality in 2020, what do you love most about working in hospitality that made you come back?

During the pandemic, hotels closed and I felt the need to go back to what I considered home so that I could be close to my family and loved ones. I moved back to my apartment in Paris, a very cozy nest in Montmartre, with the idea to do a few months sabbatical. Louis Vuitton contacted me to co-manage their most renowned store in Place Vendôme in Paris – a four-story building with 115 employees. After that experience, I knew I wanted to come back to hospitality and become a General Manager, to Four Seasons specifically, as it is the leading luxury hotel brand in the world. But the main reason for my return was that I realized that I wanted to work in an industry and at a company where kindness is an asset.

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Los Cabos at Costa Palmas

What are you looking forward to in your role now as General Manager at the Four Seasons Costa Palmas? Can you describe a typical day?

The hotel is located in an area of Los Cabos, the East Cape, which is away from the crowds and surrounded by breathtaking nature. In all my travels, I have never seen such beautiful natural landscapes or swam in more spectacular beaches. Also, the quality of service in Mexico is exceptional, from the heart, and based on genuine kindness.

I would like to elevate our existing offerings with new, creative initiatives that highlight our incredible food and beverage outlets – we have 13 in the Costa Palmas community – our world-renowned spa, and the multiple unique activities of this breathtaking destination.

While no day is ever the same, which is a big part of why I was drawn to hospitality, we have a saying around here that I have found to be true, “there are no bad days on the East Cape.”

Do you feel it is more challenging as a woman in this role? If so, in what ways?

I think being a general manager is a demanding role, whether you are a man or a woman, because it requires a personal investment in terms of time and focus. More than challenging, I would say that it is an extremely exciting role. The day to day needs are multiple and enriching. From studying floor plans with engineers to enhance our product, or choosing the best dishes for a new seasonal menu, to teaching the quality standards in each department, listening to our employees, connecting with the guests during their stay, working with sales and marketing on strategies for the year, optimizing our costs and procedures, and so much more, there is never a dull moment!

As a GM, I lead over 600 employees, so I spend part of my day connecting with the team and giving direction through well-thought out strategies. It is a dream job and a role that constantly reminds me that every challenge we may encounter is just an opportunity waiting to be seized.

Mark Anderson, Sandra Oliva, (second to left) General Manager of Four Seasons Resort and Residences Los Cabos at Costa Palmas, , Niamh Hartel, Sarabeth Quattlebaum, Rikki L., Renée Strauss ( Co-founder & CEO of Wedaways), Susie Albin-Najera, Gabrielle Wile and Hailey Lillard. Photo by Anya Kernes @anyakernes

Did you have female mentors throughout your career who helped you succeed to where you are today?

I’ve had the privilege of working with many women at Four Seasons that helped me to grow, each with different personalities and backgrounds. My current area president is a woman, Ilse Harley, and my previous regional vice president was Cornelia Samara. I also had the chance to work hand-in-hand with Daniela Trovato in Europe, and all of them have been very inspiring leaders.

However, more than any one person, the women who have continuously helped me to succeed were the women who were on my teams, under my leadership, or peers. There is so much that we can all learn from one another. It was my honor to be a representative for them, and for the dreams that they had.

Do you see more women rising to the ranks of general manager, or is it still mainly men in this arena?

There are still more general managers who are men than women currently, but the percentage is growing exponentially every year and I believe it will continue to do so, in large part because there is more and more female representation in this role.

When we see someone who might look like us in a certain role, it helps us to dream and to set goals.

Every culture has a variety of obstacles pertaining to this conversation, however, I feel incredibly proud to work with a brand like Four Seasons who gives opportunity based on merit and experience. Our teams are better and stronger because of our differences.

Do you yourself mentor other women, or give back to organizations that help women who want careers in hospitality? What other causes are important to you?

Throughout my career, I have had several women mentees, we keep in touch regularly, and I make myself available for any advice they may need. It is an honor to be a small part of shaping tomorrow’s hospitality superstars.

There are so many worthy causes, but one that is near and dear to my heart is helping to fight against women and children trafficking. It is a terrible plague that is unfortunately present in the travel and tourism sector.

What is your message, or most important piece of advice, to other women who would like to rise in the ranks of hospitality?

The secret of guaranteed success is consistency. Be the best version of yourself every day. Have a positive attitude, and you will stand out amongst the crowds and be trusted with more responsibility.

It never came to my mind that being a woman could stop me in my career ambitions. Although I faced unconscious bias many times, it never affected my consistent conviction for equality with my male peers. Not for a second.

What do you hope to achieve in your role as general manager at Four Seasons Costa Palmas?

I want this Resort to be known as one of the world´s best, because it truly is. It is a hidden gem, located in a magical, natural destination away from the crowds, and with an exquisite design. There is nothing like it anywhere else in the world.

Hailing from Park City, Utah, Vanessa Fukunaga has been a very busy woman in Los Cabos for the past 12 years. Not only is she the Owner, President, & CEO of Engel & Völkers Snell Real Estate, she is also the CEO and Publisher of the luxury networking platform, Ocean Blue World.

Among her many accolades, Vanessa was named one of the Most Inspiring Women Leaders to Follow in 2024 by Success Knocks Magazine.

Here is our interview with her:

What was your career trajectory prior to Engel & Völkers Snell Real Estate?

Before acquiring Snell Real Estate, I spent 16 years as a senior executive with Carlson Wagonlit Travel, the leading corporate business travel company in the United States.

Could you briefly share the inception story of Engel & Völkers Snell Real Estate?

Snell Real Estate was established in 1997. Following its acquisition in 2012, I introduced Engel & Völkers to Mexico for the first time, creating a landmark moment for the global brand and giving rise to Engel & Völkers Snell Real Estate. And now today, with nearly $3.6 billion in sales volume, a pioneering 27-year legacy, and an impressive roster of internationally recognized accolades, we proudly hold the title of Mexico’s #1 luxury real estate brokerage year after year.

Engel & Völkers Snell Real Estate team

What motivated you to head Engel & Völkers Snell Real Estate — Mexico´s #1 luxury real estate brokerage?

In 2012, I acquired the brokerage after being captivated by the beauty, culture, and potential of Los Cabos during a vacation. The destination’s allure as a premier luxury hotspot, combined with its growing reputation, presented a compelling opportunity. Recognizing the potential for significant business success in this high-end market, I was inspired to bring my vision and expertise to elevate the brokerage, ultimately transforming it into Mexico’s leading name in luxury real estate.

Describe a typical day for you. How do you juggle leading two successful and prominent companies?

As the owner, president, and CEO of Engel & Völkers Snell Real Estate and the CEO and publisher of Ocean Blue World, I balance a dynamic range of responsibilities. I also personally assist high-net-worth clients from around the globe in buying and selling ultra-luxury properties. Additionally, I have my podcast— “Mod Pod with Fukunaga,” I actively contribute to various community organizations as well as foster partnerships with multiple luxury real estate groups around the globe.

A typical day is fast-paced and multi-faceted, with my time divided between meetings, presentations, hosting or attending special events, property tours, networking, cocktail gatherings, traveling, community-driven initiatives, and so much more.

What unique qualities and values do you believe your clients admire in you as a business leader and individual?

I believe my clients admire my unwavering values, strong ethics, and relentless drive for success. Also, my openness and genuine willingness to inspire and motivate others, my global experience and ability to share meaningful stories — always with the intention of using them to help others and contribute positively.

How do you foster a culture of empowerment within your organizations?

I champion a philosophy of “teamwork” and equip my team with the confidence and the resources they need to effectively market our listings and showcase our destination. Every initiative is rooted in a commitment to shaping the brokerage, and the industry, with far-reaching and lasting impact. This means driving innovation, thinking outside the box, and marketing our brand and services in truly unique ways—all guided by strategy and purpose.

The global real estate industry is ever-changing, inundated with constant news and noise. It’s our responsibility to not only understand and monitor our market but also to assess global trends. This insight forms the foundation for our strategic decisions and forecasting, enabling us to devise the best ways to support our team, network, and community while nurturing leadership potential at every step.

What makes working in the Los Cabos luxury real estate space special or unique?

Los Cabos attracts buyers from around the globe for many reasons: its easy accessibility, year-round comfortable climate, stunning beaches, diverse recreational activities, world-class amenities, vibrant arts and culture scene, philanthropic spirit, and exceptional value in the second and third home markets. The region’s allure draws travelers, leisure enthusiasts, media personalities, celebrities, savvy investors, and affluent individuals, creating an unparalleled buying opportunity—and we have the privilege of living and working here where others vacation!

Luxury ownership options range from exclusive beachfront retreats and majestic mountaintop haciendas to exquisite golf villas, luxury resort residences, prime development and land opportunities, and a diverse selection of commercial properties. Our portfolio spans the most sought-after locations in the Baja California Sur, including San José del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas, the East Cape, Todos Santos, and La Paz. Los Cabos continues to thrive as a premier destination, offering something truly extraordinary for everyone.

What advice would you give to another woman aspiring to follow in your footsteps?

Strive to become the expert in your field. Embrace perseverance—success often comes from pushing through challenges. And lastly, continuously innovate, create, and always be on the lookout for the next big idea.

About Vanessa Fukunaga – Owner, President & CEO of Engel & Völkers Snell Real Estate & Ocean Blue World

A powerhouse in luxury real estate, Vanessa Fukunaga has transformed high-end property investment in Los Cabos. Her leadership, strategic marketing, and deep expertise in the luxury sector position her as both a visionary and an authority in business and media. For over a decade, she has led her team to more than $3.6 billion USD in sales, securing Engel & Völkers Snell Real Estate’s standing as Mexico’s #1 luxury brokerage year after year. As she continues to make her mark on the global business landscape, Fukunaga feels that in many ways, she has only just begun.

Los Cabos is a beautiful destination known for its breathtaking views, and its luxurious hotels and restaurants. But for some, it is also the place to fall in love – like Jesús Padilla and Carmen Paredes did.

Jesús proudly calls himself a “choyero” (the nickname for those born in the state of Baja California Sur, Mexico.) He was born in Ensenada, but he has been a true Los Cabos local since the age of six. As for Carmen Paredes, she is from Mazatlan, Sinaloa.

Carmen and Jesús first crossed paths, in 2012, while both working at the One&Only Palmilla resort. What was meant to be a one-year adventure in Los Cabos for Carmen, quickly turned into forever after meeting Jesús.

“Love has a way of changing plans, doesn’t it?,” Carmen mentions.

Six years ago, they started the Los Cabos-based destination management company (DMC), VIVO Luxury Services, which today employs a team of 30.

Here’s the rest of our conversation with the husband and wife founding team:

What made you decide to start VIVO DMC?

Jesús always felt more at home in the dynamic energy of airports than in the structure of hotel operations. His free spirit thrives on momentum, and his mantra has always been, “We set the tone and wave the last goodbye.” Six years ago, we saw an opportunity to become key suppliers within the same hospitality industry, recognizing the need for providers who not only understood high service standards but also brought creativity, passion, and expertise to the table. That’s how VIVO DMC was born. Since then, it’s been an incredible journey of growth, reinvention, and raising the bar for excellence.

What were your work backgrounds before starting VIVO?

Jesús built a career in luxury hospitality, serving as Guest Services Manager at One&Only Palmilla, with earlier experience at Las Ventanas al Paraíso and The Westin. He was a pioneer in airport logistics, maintaining strong relationships with all three airports. Carmen, on the other hand, spent two years with the prestigious Twin Dolphin and Maravilla Clubs as Director of Communications & Membership. Before that, she was part of the opening team at Montage Los Cabos, where she dedicated four years as Marketing Manager. Today, our energy is focused on growing VIVO and raising our two children Elena and Leonardo —a beautiful blend of entrepreneurial ambition and family life.

Describe a typical day for each of you.

Our day starts with e-mail checks and school drop-offs for the kids, followed by a quick workout. Over breakfast, we connect and plan the day ahead. Carmen focuses on building relationships with event planners, travel advisors, and clients, while Jesús leads our executive team and ensures smooth daily operations. We place great importance on empowering our team—HR, Finance, Planning, Maintenance, and Operations—along with the ongoing maintenance and supervision of our fleet. Afternoons mix meetings with family time—picking up the kids, having lunch together, and taking them to their activities. We always make time for a family dinner before winding down with our evening routine.

The Padilla-Paredes family

Is it hard being married and working together?

It’s like a non-stop team-building exercise with a dash of comedy! After 10 years of marriage, we’ve mastered the art of balancing love and logistics. We know when to collaborate, when to delegate, and when to offer each other snacks to keep the peace. Honestly, working together has made us an even stronger team—though we’ve learned that calling a “meeting” is much more effective than arguing over who forgot to restock the coffee!

What do you love most about working and living in Los Cabos?

Los Cabos really is one of a kind. It’s got the perfect balance of international exposure for our kids and a relaxed lifestyle, as well as beautiful beaches and all the peace and quiet we need. The quality of life here is incredible—not just compared to the rest of Mexico, but anywhere. It’s the ideal spot for both work and family life, especially with so many people from all over the world. Honestly, we wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!

Do you think being in Los Cabos contributes to the success of your company?

Absolutely! Los Cabos is the perfect fit for us. We’ve always worked with the most discerning clientele, and this destination is home to the world’s elite—many of the wealthiest individuals have their homes here. We’re fortunate to collaborate with some of the best planners and agencies globally, and the unique blend of international exposure and high-end service in Los Cabos is a key factor in our success. It’s a place that aligns perfectly with our values and the exceptional service we’re committed to providing.

Courtesy VIVO Luxury Services

What is the company’s most successful service offered would you say?

Our best-kept secret is our exceptional planning team. They are the true stars behind the scenes, making sure that every airport host, driver, and operational staff member is perfectly aligned and on time. We’ve built a strong reputation, especially within private clubs, because of our commitment to service, punctuality, and discretion. From airport transfers to private drivers for dinners, golf outings, and any special request, we handle everything with precision. A key highlight of our service is our door-to-door experience; this attention to detail, consistency, and personalized care is what sets us apart and drives the success of our service.

Do you have a most memorable moment since founding VIVO?

One of our proudest moments was the opening of our own headquarters, just minutes from SJD airport. We started small—with only three vehicles and three drivers—and watching our fleet and team grow has been nothing short of amazing. The expansion was a milestone, and to celebrate, we threw a party to mark the occasion. What makes it even more special is knowing that today, we support nearly 40 families in the destination, with no plans of slowing down. It’s incredible to see how far we’ve come and how much we’ve grown!

What are your goals for the future for VIVO?

Our goal for VIVO is to continue growing while keeping our experienced team intact and attracting fresh talent. We’re committed to offering the best benefits in the industry, as our team is key to maintaining the trust and relationships we’ve built with our clients. We began as a B2B business, but thanks to the confidence our clients place in us, we’re now seeing a rise in direct requests. We’re incredibly proud to be a part of FIPROTUR and are expanding our DMC services to collaborate with global partners from markets like the UK, Germany, and Japan.

Teenagers and college students aren’t the only ones entitled to a Spring Break. How about their parents, who deserve an interlude in the sun at a beautiful beachfront resort with all the amenities one could wish for?

Currently celebrating its 20th anniversary as one of the most popular resorts in Los Cabos, Pueblo Bonito Pacifica Golf & Spa Resort is a sparkling Land’s End hideaway at the tip of the Baja Peninsula.
Sloping paths in front of the U-shaped, 201-room hotel wind through a cactus garden and lead to a pair of swimming pools and a large hot tub. Beyond is a broad stretch of pristine beach ideal for a carefree stroll. It’s a beachcomber’s delight, a perfect place to toss your cares to the wind, or cuddle in a cabana. Sheltered from the outside world in a steep-walled mountain valley, Pacifica is just a 10-minute ride from lively Cabo San Lucas.

Carbajal, originally from Michoacán, México, and Niikura, a chef from Tokyo, Japan since the 1970’s, got together and opened Nick-San in 1994 – the first Mexican-Japanese fusion restaurant in Los Cabos.

According to Destino Magazine, the idea to merge these two cuisines “emerged from the scarcity of ingredients in the region 30 years ago…the infusion of Mexican elements like cilantro, avocado, chilies, onions, garlic, and mango shaped the legacy of Nick-San.”

Carbajal’s first love was fishing, and Niikura was also attracted to all the fish in Los Cabos. So he would visit every year in the 1980’s. After becoming friends, Niikura convinced Carbajal to open a restaurant together, because he told him they could do something so unique using their specialized skills and resources. Thirty years later, it has proven true.

Describe a typical day for you? And what is your favorite aspect of your role at Nick-San?

I start my day at 6 am with a cup of coffee. Some days I go fishing, others I play golf. I go to the gym, and I have breakfast with my mother two days of each week if I´m not traveling.

Every day I go to the restaurants – either in downtown San Lucas or in Palmilla – sometimes to both locations. I try to be present to greet our regular customers, and have lunch with my family almost every day of the week.

I love being in the kitchen preparing something new. I always try dishes with my brothers, Eddy and George, before serving them in the restaurant so that I can give regular and new customers a great experience.

Which is your favorite culinary creation, and why?

My Tuna Tostada & Lobster roll, because I created these with the part of the protein that was not used before. I did not know that these would become very popular. Now we only use lobster tail and tuna loin.

Which dishes would you say is the most popular among guests?

    #1 Tuna tostada

    #2 Lobster roll

    #3 Sushi tuna cake

   # 4 Sashimi Hamachi curry

   # 5 Shrimp and scallops Gyoza (homemade)

Are you having a special celebration for the 30th anniversary of the restaurant? In what ways have you seen the restaurant evolve over 3 decades?

Unfortunately, it would be very difficult to have one big party, because we have so many regular customers and their places of residence so varied. However, we have done several activities with different clients during the year.

Throughout the past 30 years, I’ve seen great changes in our tourist destinations, population growth, magnificent resorts, many restaurants with excellent gastronomic proposals. This has helped me to seek and generate the necessary changes to continue being a place that remains among the favorites of locals and visitors.

Any exciting plans for Nick-San in near the future?

We do have some exciting plans like cooking in a clay oven. We will make it public when the project will be accomplished 100 percent.

In 2006, Juan Carlos Del Rio already had 24 years of experience working in sales and marketing for hotel chains when he co-founded the award-winning destination management company (DMC), EPIC, in Los Cabos.

His partner, Manuel Carrera, manages the Cancun Riviera Maya offices – where they are currently celebrating the 35th anniversary.

Del Rio is the managing partner of the Los Cabos – La Paz offices where he leads a team of more than 60 professionals and ensures the processes are managed under the highest standards. He says punctuality and honorability are of utmost importance to him.

Recently, EPIC has been recognized by Travel Leaders, a leading travel agent network in North America, as the official DMC in Los Cabos.

Here’s a little more of our conversation with Del Rio:

Where are you from originally?

I was born and raised in Acapulco during the vibrant 1960s. I believe my deep connection to hospitality and tourism stems from this rich background.

What do you think makes EPIC such a successful DMC?

Aside from our long time relationships with most leading hospitality companies across the globe, our epicurean teams have played an integral role in our success – their expertise, commitment, love and attention to detail, and passion, makes us excel in what we do.

What should one look for when selecting a DMC in Los Cabos?

Besides expertise, commitment, love for detail and passion, I should also mention honorability, imagination, innovation, and on-time delivery.

Juan Carlos Del Rio, managing partner of EPIC DMC

Which is your favorite tour EPIC DMC offers, and why?

At Epic, we offer a wide variety of tours and experiences, but one that holds a special place in my heart is the “Las Lupitas Trails: An Off-Road Adventure.” This unique journey takes guests on a one-of-a-kind ride through the Baja outback in specially adapted 4X4 Jeeps.

The adventure begins in the town of San José and climbs into the Sierra de la Laguna, visiting unique locations along the way. One of the highlights is a stop at Tsegyalgar West, a retreat center for the Dzogchen International Tibetan community. From there, we head to the awe-inspiring Las Mañanitas Colossal Rock, mysteriously set next to the breathtaking hidden waterfall of Los Naranjos. Here, our guests can discover ancient cave paintings, believed to be between 9,000 and 11,000 years old, from yet unknown human settlements.

The trail continues through a deep and wild canyon with magnificent vistas, culminating with a champagne toast to admire the sunset over the Pacific Ocean. The adventure concludes with a visit to Todos Santos where we visit the renowned Jazamango restaurant, crafted by the famous Chef Javier Plascencia.

The trail is named “Las Lupitas” for the numerous dedicated altars venerating the Virgin of Guadalupe located at the entrance of every tiny ranch we pass along the way.

Any exciting plans for the company that you would like to mention for the near future?

Absolutely, we have several exciting plans that keep us in a creatively motivated spirit!

We’ve initiated a luxe car renewal program. This includes adding 10 brand new Lincoln Navigator units to our fleet, ensuring we provide the best luxury transportation in Los Cabos.

EPIC DMC luxury transportation

We’re also excited to share our plans to expand EPIC DMC to Puerto Vallarta by mid-2025. This new location will join our existing offices in Los Cabos, Cancun, and Mexico City – offering our clients the best beach and colonial destinations in Mexico, and we promise to maintain the high level of service we are known for.

This article was created in partnership with FIPROTUR Los Cabos under the private trust.
